In news– Recently, the National Thermal Power Corporation Limited (NTPC ) has made commercially operational an additional 42.5 MW of power generation capacity at Ramagundam floating solar project in Telangana.

About the project-

  • The project is of 100 MW capacity and is the country’s largest floating solar power plant.
  • The 4.5 lakh photovoltaic solar panels will cover 450-acre areas of the reservoir.
  • Aimed at reducing its carbon footprints and accelerating its green energy production to 30 percent of its capacity.
  • With the addition of 42.5MW, the total commercially operational power generation capacity of Ramagundam floating solar project has reached 80 MW. 
  • Earlier the NTPC had commissioned 17.5 MW (Part-I) and 20 MW (Part-II) of the project.

Renewable energy park at Rann of Kutch-

  • NTPC Renewable Energy Ltd , a 100% subsidiary of NTPC, in 2021 had received the go-ahead from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) to set up a 4750 MW renewable energy park at Rann of Kutch in Khavada, Gujarat. 
  • This will be India’s largest solar park to be built by the largest power producer of the country.

NTPC-

  • NTPC is India’s largest energy conglomerate with roots planted way back in 1975 to accelerate power development in India. 
  • From fossil fuels it has forayed into generating electricity via hydro, nuclear and renewable energy sources. 
  • NTPC became a Maharatna company in May 2010.
