In news- While inaugurating the three day International Conference on “Systems Analysis for Enabling Integrated Policy Making” the Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) Science & Technology has shared India’s roadmap for climate protection.
About the conference-
- The conference was organised by the Technology Information, Forecasting & Assessment Council (TIFAC) in collaboration with International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis(IIASA).
- It was attended by around 1000 academicians, researchers, practitioners, government officials,
- IIASA representatives, policy planners from diverse disciplines are formulating ideas and identifying complex issues of climate change, pollution, clean energy, livelihood, and digitalization widely shared by countries across Asia at the three day event.
- Participants from Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Austria, USA, China, Iran, Philippines, Japan and Jordan are designing solutions using the multilateral application of systems analysis tools with a focus on extensive interaction among various stakeholders.
India’s roadmap for climate protection-
As per the road map, India is committed to reducing its aggregate greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) by one billion tonnes by 2030, decreasing its dependency on fossil fuels by 50 per cent of the total consumption in 2030; reducing carbon to GDP intensity by 45 per cent from the 2005 levels and making entire country carbon neutral by 2070.
Technology Information, Forecasting & Assessment Council (TIFAC)-
- It is an Autonomous Body under the Department of Science and Technology (DST).
- It was established by the Government of India in 1988.
- It was mandated to assess the state-of-art of technology and set directions for future technological development in India in important socio-economic sectors.
- As a unique knowledge network institution in India, TIFAC activities encompass a wide array of technology areas and fill a critical gap in the overall S&T system of India.
International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis(IIASA)-
- It is an international research institute that advances systems analysis and applies its research methods to identify policy solutions to reduce human footprints.
- It also seeks to enhance the resilience of natural and socioeconomic systems, and help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.
- In October 1972, representatives of the Soviet Union, United States, and 10 other countries from the Eastern and Western blocs met in London to sign the charter establishing the IIASA.
- IIASA is a non-governmental institution funded by scientific organizations in its member countries.
- India is also a member of the institute.
- It is based in Laxenburg, near Vienna, in Austria.
- IIASA is governed by a Council that is made up of one representative of each of the institute’s member countries.
