In news– In order to orient its officers and men posted along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Tibetan culture, the Army has begun a course in Tibetology in a tie-up with the Central Institute of Himalayan Cultural Studies in Arunachal Pradesh.
Key updates
- The Army’s Training Command, ARTRAC, has identified seven institutes for Tibetology across the country, two of which are in the Northeast.
- The other one is the Namgyal Institute of Tibetology in Sikkim.
- Officers posted around in the area would be considered for the course.
- Such training was happening but now it has been formalised.
- On a trial basis, the first batch with 15 officers was held from March to May this year and the Army has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with the institute.
- The officers who are trained will function as trainers in their battalions and in a few years.
- During the 42 days of the preliminary course, Tibetan history, geopolitics and current political dynamics were covered in the form of lectures and case studies.
About Central Institute of Himalayan Cultural Studies-
- It is located in Dahung, West Kameng District, Arunachal Pradesh.
- It was established under the aegis of the Buddhist Culture Preservation Society (BCPS), Bomdila.
- The institute has got registered under the Society Registration Act 1860.
- It has become an Autonomous Body of the Ministry of Culture, Government of India.
- The mandate of the society is to undertake undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes in Buddhist and Himalayan studies and it may also establish and maintain feeder schools.
The Army Training Command(ARTRAC)-
- It is one of the seven commands of the Indian Army.
- It is currently based at Shimla.
- The Army Training Command was established on 1 October 1991 at Mhow in Madhya Pradesh and moved to Shimla on 31 March 1993.
- In 2019, it was decided to merge the Directorate General of Military Training (DGMT) with ARTRAC.
- DGMT runs the Rashtriya Military Schools (RMS).
Role-
- Formulation and dissemination of concepts and doctrines of warfare in the fields of strategy, operational art, tactics, logistics, training and human resource development.
- Acting as the nodal agency for all institutional training in the Army.
- Evolve joint doctrines in conjunction with other Services.
