In news– Every year World Standards Day is observed on October 14.
About the day-
- The day is dedicated to notifying consumers, policymakers, and businesses regarding the importance of standardised measures, technologies and industries.
- October 14 was decided as the World Standards Day to commemorate the first gathering of representatives from 25 nations in London in 1956, which marked the launch of an international body to facilitate standardisation. They created the International Organization for Standardisation (ISO) a year later.
- ISO was founded in 1947 with 67 technical committees. The first World Standards Day, however, was formally inaugurated in 1970 by Faruk Sunter, then-President of the ISO.
- World Standards Day recognises the contributions of groups like the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), International Ethics Standards Board for Accountants (IESBA), Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), and the ISO, as well as the professionals, who collaborate with them.
- The theme for 2022 is ‘Shared Vision For a Better World.’
- Bureau of Indian Standards(BIS), Mumbai organised Conclave –“Manak Mahotsav” on occasion of World Standards Day based on the theme ‘Standards for Sustainable Development Goals – A Shared Vision for a Better World’.
- BIS is the National Standard Body working under the Ministry of consumer affairs, food and public distribution, Government of India.
