In news–World Oceans Day is observed every year on June 8 to raise awareness of the role played by the oceans in human lives.
About World Oceans Day-
- Oceans Day was first declared on 8 June, 1992 in Rio de Janeiro at the Global Forum, a parallel event at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) which provided an opportunity for NGOs and civil society to express their views on environmental issues.
- The Declaration was inspired by an event organized on that day by the Oceans Institute of Canada and supported by the Canadian Government: “OCEANS DAY AT GLOBAL FORUM – THE BLUE PLANET”.
- The programme featured international experts, opinion leaders and those in a position to speak for the oceans’ contributions to sustaining the Blue Planet.
- After 16 years, the UN General Assembly passed a resolution in 2008 to designate 8 June as World Oceans Day.
- In 2009, the inaugural observance was organised and the theme was ‘Our Ocean, Our Responsibility’.
- The theme for 2022 is “Revitalization: Collective Action for the Ocean.”
- In 2021, the theme was “The Ocean: Life & Livelihoods”.
Note-
- As per the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development(OECD) report, plastics make up at least 85% of marine litter.
- The oceans receive most plastic trash from land.
- The majority of river-borne plastic enters the ocean from just 10 rivers and eight of these are in Asia.
- The Yangtze in China contributes 1.5 million metric tonnes of plastic a year.
- India’s per-capita generation of plastic waste has almost doubled in the past five years — generating about 3.5 million tonnes of plastic waste each year.
