About the World Environment Day-
- It is organised by the United Nations (UN) to generate awareness about the significance of nature.
- The 1972 UN Conference on the Human Environment in Stockholm, Sweden led to the formation of UNEP and the designation of June 5 to be celebrated every year as World Environment Day.
- “Only One Earth” was the slogan for the 1972 Stockholm Conference.
- Since 1973, World Environment Day has developed into a global platform for raising environmental awareness and acting on urgent planetary issues.
- The year 2022 marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of UNEP.
- To commemorate the 1972 UN Conference on Human Environment, Sweden and Kenya, with support from UNEP and partners, are organizing a high-level international meeting in 2022: “Stockholm+50: a healthy planet for the prosperity of all – our responsibility, our opportunity”.
United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (UNDER)-
The UNDER 2021–2030 was conceived as a means of highlighting the need for greatly increased global cooperation to restore degraded and destroyed ecosystems, contributing to efforts to combat climate change and safeguard biodiversity, food security, and water supply.
