In news–  The Indian Bureau of Mines (IBM) has flagged the issue of illegal transportation of manganese ore leading to massive loss of revenue in Odisha.

About IBM-

  • The Indian Bureau of Mines (IBM) is a subordinate office under the Ministry of Mines.
  • It is engaged in the promotion of scientific development of mineral resources of the country, conservation of minerals, protection of environment in mines for minerals, other than coal, petroleum and natural gas, atomic mineral and minor minerals.
  • Set up on 1st March,1948, IBM functioned purely as an advisory body.
  • It helped government in framing various rules like Mines & Minerals (Regulation & Development) Act, 1948, Mineral Concession Rules, 1949 and Petroleum Concession Rules, 1949.
  • IBM was given a set of functions in 1950 and in accordance with it, the inspection of mines and mineral prospects became a regular activity.
  • By 1953 IBM was given an additional function of undertaking detailed exploration of mineral deposits. Among the minerals explored by IBM were Iron Ore, Limestone, Dolomite, Coal, Copper, Tungsten.
  • Later Mineral Conservation & Development Rules,1955 and Mining Leases (Modification of Terms),1956 were framed.
  • An ore dressing laboratory was set up at Delhi in 1955.
  •  It performs regulatory functions, namely enforcement of the Mineral Conservation and Development Rules, 1988, the relevant provisions of the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, 1957, Mineral Concession Rules, 1960 and Environmental (Protection) Act, 1986 and Rules made thereunder. It also undertakes scientific, technoeconomic, research oriented studies in various aspects of mining, geological studies, ore beneficiation and environmental studies. 
  •  IBM is organized into six functional divisions, namely :
    1.  Mines Control and Conservation of Minerals Division. 
    2. Ore Dressing Division. 
    3. Technical Consultancy, Mining Research and Publication Division. 
    4. Mineral Economics Division.
    5. Mining and Mineral Statistics Division.
    6. Planning and Co-ordination Division.
  • IBM has its headquarters at Nagpur, 03 Zonal Offices at Ajmer, Bangalore and Nagpur, and 12 Regional Offices. 

Note: 

Odisha is a mineral-rich State having 96.12% of the country’s chrome ore, 51.15% bauxite reserve of India, 33.61% of hematite iron ore and 43.64% of manganese.
