In news– Seventh edition of Sustainable Development Report has been released recently.
About the report-
- The Sustainable Development Report (formerly the SDG Index & Dashboards) is the first worldwide study to assess where each country stands with regard to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and the UN Agenda 2030.
- It uses publicly available data published by official data providers (World Bank, WHO, ILO, others) and other organizations including research centers and non-governmental organizations.
- Governments and civil society alike can utilize the Sustainable Development Report to identify priorities for action, understand key implementation challenges, track progress, ensure accountability, and identify gaps that must be closed in order to achieve the SDGs by 2030.
- It is published by a group of independent experts at the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN).
- The 2022 SDG Index is topped by three Nordic countries – Finland, Denmark and Sweden – and all top 10 countries are European countries.
- For the second year in a row, the world is no longer making progress on the SDGs.
- The average SDG Index score slightly declined in 2021, partly due to slow or nonexistent recovery in poor and vulnerable countries.
- The 2022 International Spillover Index included in this report underlines how rich countries, including many European countries, generate negative socioeconomic and environmental spillovers, including through unsustainable trade and supply chains.
India’s ranking-
- India’s rank in the global Sustainable Development Report, 2022 has slipped for the third consecutive year.
- India has been ranked 121 in the index with the SDG index score of 60.3.
- The country continues to face major challenges in achieving 11 of the 17 SDGs, which has pushed down its global ranking on SDG preparedness.
- The progress in around 10 of these goals is similar to those in 2021. These include SDG 2 on ending hunger, SDG 3 on good health and well being and SDG 6 on clean water and sanitation.
- But ensuring decent work (SDG 8) has become more challenging, the report showed.
