In News: The Department of Social Justice and Empowerment has formulated the scheme of National Action Plan for Senior Citizens (NAPSrC) with effect from 01.04.2020 which has a sub-scheme of Programmes for National Institute of Social Defence for Senior Citizens (NISDSrC). 

About NISDSrC

Ministry: Social Justice and Empowerment 

The NISDSrC includes programme inter-alia “Awareness Generation and Sensitization Programme” which has the following activities :- 

  • Special campaigns to spread awareness on mental health issues.
  • Conducting awareness campaigns on all aspects such as provisions of Maintenance and Welfare of Parents Senior Citizens (MWPSC) Act. 2007.
  • Positive attitude towards the elderly vulnerabilities of senior citizens including awareness on various welfare schemes for senior citizens.
  • Training and capacity building of communities/families on geriatric care.
  • Information, Education and Communication (IEC) material on self care, nutritional needs and information on government schemes etc.

National Institute of Social Defence

Ministry: Social Justice and Empowerment 

Background

  • The National Institute of Social Defence was set up originally as the Central Bureau of Correctional Services in 1961, under the Ministry of Home Affairs, in pursuance of the recommendations emerging at various National Forums. 
  • In 1964, the Bureau was transferred to the then Department of Social Security.
  • Since 1975, the Institute has been a subordinate office under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. 
  • The National Institute of Social Defence has become an Autonomous Body July 15, 2002, and is registered under the Societies Act of 1860 with the Government of NCT, Delhi.

Role of National Institute of Social Defence

  • The National Institute of Social Defence is the nodal training and research institute in the field of social defence. 
  • Though social defence covers the entire gamut of activities and programmes for the protection of society, it is currently focusing on human resource development in the areas of drug abuse prevention, welfare of senior citizens and transgenders, beggary prevention, and other social defence issues.

What is the National Institute of Social Defence?

  • NISD is a Central Advisory Body for the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India.
  • It is a Centre of Excellence on research and training in the field of social defence.
  • NISD coordinates and liaises between the government and the non-government organisations at state, national and international levels.
  • The institute develops preventive, curative and rehabilitative tools, programmes and policies in the field of social defence, and also undertakes research, training, consultancy, documentation and publication in the field.

Mandate: The mandate of the institute is to provide inputs for the social defence programmes of the Government of India through training, research and documentation.
