In news: NITI Aayog releases the second edition of the India Innovation Index 2020 on 20 January in a virtual event. 

What is it?

  • The India Innovation Index 2020 seeks to rank the states and union territories based on their relative performance of supporting innovation, and to empower them to improve their innovation polices by highlighting their strengths and weaknesses.
  • The index captures the trends and provides detailed analyses of the various factors that drive innovation at the country, state, and district levels.
  • The ranking methodology is designed in a way that states can draw lessons from the national leaders in innovation.

Who prepared it?

It is jointly prepared by NITI Aayog and the Institute of Competitiveness

Key highlights of the Index

  • According to NITI Aayog’s Vice- Chairman, the findings of India Innovation Index, 2020 highlight that we are on the right track, with States taking several measures to improve their innovation ecosystem in the spirit of Competitive Federalism
  • The 2020 edition builds on the previous year’s methodology by introducing more metrics to provide a more holistic outlook of the Indian economy.

About the index

    • The release of the second edition of the index—the first was launched in October 2019—demonstrates the Government’s continued commitment towards transforming the country into an innovation-driven economy.
    • States covered: The states and union territories have been divided into 17 ‘Major States’, 10 ‘North-East and Hill States’, and 9 ‘City States and Union Territories’, for effectively comparing their performance. 
    • Ranking categories: The states and union territories have been ranked on two broad categories: outcome and governance. 
    • Indicators: Overall, the framework of India Innovation Index 2020 consists of 36 indicators, which include hard data (32 indicators) and four composite indicators.
  • Methodology: India Innovation Index 2020 builds on the previous year’s methodology by introducing more metrics and providing a holistic outlook of the Indian innovation ecosystem.
  • New Parameters: The framework has been updated to include globally considered parameters for measuring innovation (such as the percentage of gross domestic product spent on research and development), while also retaining the parameters specific to the Indian economy.
  • The index captures the trends and provides detailed analyses of the various factors that drive innovation at the country, state, and district levels

 

Institute for Competitiveness

  • Institute for Competitiveness, India is the Indian knot in the global network of the Institute for Strategy and Competitiveness at Harvard Business School. 
  • It is an international initiative centered in India, dedicated to enlarging and purposeful disseminating of the body of research and knowledge on competition and strategy, as pioneered over the last 25 years by Professor Michael Porter of the Institute for Strategy and Competitiveness at Harvard Business School. 
  • It conducts & supports indigenous research; offers academic & executive courses; provides advisory services to the Corporate & the Governments and organise events. 
  • The institute studies competition and its implications for company strategy; the competitiveness of nations, regions & cities and thus generate guidelines for businesses and those in governance; and suggests & provides solutions for socio-economic problems.
