Unearthing history isn’t always on the list of things to do when taking a stroll through a forest, yet that’s precisely what happened in the lush woods of the Oise region in northern France. In a serendipitous discovery, a German tunnel from World War I, buried some 98 feet beneath the earth, has emerged from its clandestine sleep, revealing stories hidden deep within.
Discovered by a passionate group of history enthusiasts in August 2021, this tunnel is like stepping into a time capsule, frozen with relics of an era long past.
The Hidden World Beneath Our Feet
Imagine running into what looks like a badger burrow while on a historical treasure hunt. That’s just what happened to the 17 members of the Association of German Undergrounds of Puisaleine and Surroundings (ASAPE 14-18). Initially, as they poked around the forests of Moulin-sous-Touvent, nestled in France’s northern landscape, that’s all they thought they had found — a little animal’s hideaway. But curiosity nudged them to dig a little deeper.
And deeper they dug, only to unveil the entrance to a hidden tunnel used by German soldiers during the harrowing years of World War I. Maximilian Hiebinger, president of ASAPE 14-18, reflected on this gripping moment:
“It’s such an intense feeling to be the first to return to these places 106 years later. You can smell the earth, the dampness, and sometimes the powder (…) we use a multi-gas detector to make sure there is enough oxygen concentration and no dangerous gases. Then we ventilate.”

A Journey Into the Past
After meticulously securing the necessary permits, the group began the laborious yet thrilling process of clearing the tunnel’s entrance, which had been cloaked beneath barbed wire and 5 feet of forest floor. Venturing carefully within, armed with specialized safety gear, they tread into a world left behind by men in uniform—packed with the whispers of a bygone era. Among the relics were unexpected mementos: soldiers’ names engraved on walls, graffiti capturing fleeting thoughts, forlorn shoes, and bottles of German and Alsatian wines clinking like ghostly echoes of camaraderie.
Even in the disparate dark silence, munition remnants spoke loudly of the tunnel’s martial history—a silent yet resounding reminder of the lives entwined with peril and perseverance.
Preserving the Echoes of History
Dating back to 1916, this newfound labyrinth has been christened “G24” by its discoverers. Recognizing the historical wealth of their find, the group decided these artifacts deserved a wider audience. The relics will be displayed in the local town of Moulin-sous-Touvent up until November 11, bringing this sliver of history before the eyes of both curious locals and learned archaeologists.
Once thoroughly documented using modern techniques such as 2D and 3D photography, there’s a plan to gently seal G24—protecting it from the twin dangers of time and potential vandalism or looting. This delicate balance of sharing and safeguarding history has found its way into the able hands of the Direction Régionale des Affaires Culturelles (DRAC), committed to preserving these links to the past.
Through diligence and determination, ASAPE 14-18 has breathed life back into another whispering chamber beneath the forest, and they show no desire to stop exploring. With hopes to delve into more such shadowed stories across 3,000 acres of nearby woodland, they aim to uncover the voices of those who once found solace in the deep earth.
