Crude Oil Spillage in Burhi Dihing River

Recently the Burhi Dihing River in eastern Assam’s Dibrugarh district burned for two days following the spillage of crude oil from punctured pipelines

About oil spill  pollution

  • Oil spills include any spill of crude oil or oil distilled products (eg.ggasoline, diesel fuels, jet fuels, kerosene, Stoddard solvent, hydraulic oils, and lubricating oils) that can pollute the surface of the land, air, and water environments. The term is usually associated with the oil spills in the ocean and coastal waters.
  • Oil Spill Pollution refers to the negative polluting effects that oil spills have on the environments and living organisms, including humans, due to the environmental discharge of various organic compounds that make up crude oil and oil distillate products, the majority of which include various individual hydrocarbons.

About Burhi Dihing river:

  • Dihing river is a tributary of Brahmaputra river in upper Assam
  • The river originates in Eastern Himalayas (the Patkai Hills)in Arunachal Pradesh and flows through Tinsukia (Tinicukeeya) and Dibrugarh Districts in Assam to its confluence with the Brahmaputra at Dihingmukh.
  • The river has created a number of oxbow lakes in the area.
  • The Disang is a tributary of the Dihing in its southern bank
  • The Betel nuts are produced most in the areas of the Dihing Plains.
