Rohingya refugees have been relocated to camp at Bhashan Char Island. While the government planned to relocate Rohingyas, environmentalists say that the Bhashan Char which has emerged less than two decades back, falls in an ecologically fragile area prone to floods, erosion and cyclones.
About Bhashan Char Island
- The Bhashan Char is an uninhabited island around 30 kilometre east of Hatiya island in South East Bangladesh. Hatiya has a population of 600,000.
- Bhashan Char island was formed about two decades ago on the mouth of river Meghna.
- Bangladesh has built the relocation camp at Bhashan Char with a capacity to accommodate about 1lakh people
- It is located in the Bay of Bengal, 37 miles from the coast.
- The island was formed with Himalayan silt in 2006.
