March 8 of every year is celebrated as International Women’s Day in many countries around the world. It is a day when women are recognized for their achievements without regard to divisions, whether national, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic or political.
The theme of this year’s celebration
- The theme of International Women’s Day 2020 is “I am Generation Equality: Realizing Women’s Rights”.
- The theme is aligned with UN Women’s new multigenerational campaign, Generation Equality, which marks the 25th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platforms for Action, the most progressive roadmap for the empowerment of women and girls, everywhere.
History of women’s Day
- Officially recognized by the United Nations in 1977, International Women’s Day first emerged from the activities of labour movements at the turn of the twentieth century in North America and across Europe
- Women’s Day is celebrated on March 8th is strongly linked to women’s movements during the Russian Revolution (1917).
