Regional English Language Office (RELO)

About RELO-

• The U.S. Mission to India established the RELO in 2005 as part of the Public Diplomacy Section of the U.S. Embassy.  
• The project aims to strengthen India-US ties by supporting English learning.
• Headquartered at the US Embassy office in New Delhi, RELO’s mission is to “support the effective teaching and learning of English in Afghanistan, Bhutan and India, while enhancing mutual understanding between the US and these countries”.

• RELO collaborates with state government and educational institutions to support them in teacher training, curriculum development and other English language training projects.
• It supports effective pre- and in-service training opportunities for English language teachers throughout the region.
• In India, RELO is headed by Ruth Goode, who is responsible for designing, managing and advising on English learning programmes for India, Afghanistan and Bhutan.
• The Delhi government has now acted as a facilitator in the Punjab government’s recent association with the US Embassy wing.
• Since 2017, several batches of English teachers in Delhi have undergone ‘Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages’ (TESOL) Core Certificate Programme offered by the US Embassy.
• The Delhi government had also launched an online professional development programme for English teachers in government schools in partnership with RELO.
