About QS rankings-
- QS World University Rankings is an annual publication of university rankings by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS).
- The QS system comprises three parts: the global overall ranking, the subject rankings (which name the world’s top universities for the study of 51 different subjects and five composite faculty areas), and five independent regional tables—namely Asia, Latin America, Emerging Europe and Central Asia, the Arab Region, and BRICS.
- QS Quacquarelli Symonds is the world’s leading provider of services, analytics, and insight to the global higher education sector, whose mission is to enable motivated people anywhere in the world to fulfil their potential through educational achievement, international mobility, and career development.
- The QS World University Rankings portfolio, inaugurated in 2004, has grown to become the world’s most popular source of comparative data about university performance.
- The QS ranking receives approval from the International Ranking Expert Group (IREG), and is viewed as one of the three most-widely read university rankings in the world, along with Academic Ranking of World Universities and Times Higher Education World University Rankings.
Indicators : QS uses six indicators to compile the ranking:
- Academic reputation (AR).
- Employer reputation (ER).
- Citations per faculty (CPF).
- Faculty/student ratio.
- International faculty ratio and
- International student ratio.
World rankings-
- Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is the top university in the world for the 11th consecutive year.
- The top 10 universities of the world remain the same, apart from a few having shifted around in the top 10 rankings this year.
- For the 2023 edition, QS analysed a total of 2,462 institutions and ranked 1,422 institutions in the world — which is their largest pool till date.
Ranking of Indian institutes-
- The top-100 list doesn’t feature any Indian university, and this is for the sixth year straight that IISc Bengaluru (Rank 155), IIT Bombay (Rank 172) and IIT Delhi (Rank 174) are the only three Indian universities that bagged a spot amongst the top 200.
- IIT Bombay saw a big dip from Rank 117 last year to Rank 172 this year.
- Forty one (41) Indian universities have featured in this highly regarded university ranking system this year.
- Only 27 Indian universities and institutes found a place amongst the top 1000 universities of the world.
- In 2023 edition, 16 of the 20 institutions selected for granting ‘Institution of Eminence’ (IoE) status by the Government of India have found a place.
