In news- Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially inaugurated the country’s first liquid nano urea plant at Kalol, Gujarat.
About Nano liquid urea-
- Urea is a chemical nitrogen fertiliser, white in colour, which artificially provides nitrogen, a major nutrient required by plants.
- The liquid nano urea produced by Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative (IFFCO) Limited is essentially urea in the form of a nanoparticle.
- It comes in a half-litre bottle and carries no burden of subsidy currently.
- A bottle of the nano urea can effectively replace at least one bag of urea.
- Apart from reducing the country’s subsidy bill, it is aimed at reducing the unbalanced and indiscriminate use of conventional urea, increase crop productivity, and reduce soil, water, and air pollution.
- While conventional urea has an efficiency of about 25 per cent, the efficiency of liquid nano urea can be as high as 85-90 per cent.
- Liquid nano urea is sprayed directly on the leaves and gets absorbed by the plant and hence wastage is less.
- It has a shelf life of a year, and farmers need not be worried about “caking” when it comes in contact with moisture.
- The product has been tested on more than 90 crops across 11,000 locations in collaboration with Krishi Vigyan Kendras of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR-KVKs), research institutes, state agriculture universities, and progressive farmers.
IFFCO is setting up additional facilities for production of nano fertilisers at Aonla, Phulpur, Bengaluru, Paradeep, Kandla, Deoghar and Guwahati, besides expanding the Kalol plant.
