In news–Chinese President Xi Jinping has proposed a new Global Security Initiative(GSI) at the Boao Forum in China recently.
About the initiative-
- It calls for a common, comprehensive, cooperative and sustainable security and building an Asian security model of mutual respect, openness and integration.
- It seeks to counter the U.S. Indo-Pacific strategy and the Quad – the India, U.S., Australia, Japan grouping.
- It would oppose the use of unilateral sanctions and long-arm jurisdiction.
- It is being stated that GSI is envisaged to uphold the principle of “indivisible security”.
- According to China, the Initiative is yet another global public good offered by it and a vivid illustration of the vision of a community with a shared future for mankind in the security field.
Quadrilateral Security Dialogue-Quad-
- It is a strategic dialogue between the United States, Japan, Australia and India that is maintained by talks between member countries.
- The dialogue was initiated in 2007 by the then Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe, with the support of the then Vice President of USA Dick Cheney, the then Prime Minister of Australia John Howard and the then Prime Minister of India Manmohan Singh.
- The diplomatic and military arrangement was widely viewed as a response to increased Chinese economic and military power.
- In a 2021 joint statement, “The Spirit of the Quad,” Quad members described “a shared vision for a Free and Open Indo-Pacific,” and a “rules-based maritime order in the East and South China Seas,” which Quad members state are needed to counter Chinese maritime claims.
